Pool cues (or sticks), by definition are a tool a player uses to strike or hit a cue ball in the game of billiards.
The parts of the pool cue include: butt, forearm, wrap, shaft, ferrule and tip. These and other parts are explained more in depth in Pool Cue Anatomy 101.
Pool cues are available as:
- One-piece cues are most often referred to as house cues because they are typically found in your local pool hall. They range in length from 36" all the way up to 57". Depending on the length of the cue, the weight can vary from 16 oz to 21 oz. One-piece cues are usually made of rosewood and maple, however, there are fiberglass house cues which are used more in commercial environments.
- Two-piece cues. These pool cues are typically 58" in length, however, there are cues that come in lengths from 42" to 52" made especially for tight walls and corners, and for children's use. There are also two-piece jump cues which are around 41". Two-piece cues which are 58" come in weights ranging from 18 oz - 21 oz. On occasion you will see a "standard" listing in the option to choose the weight of the cue. This option is for those, usually first time cue buyers or those buying a gift, who aren't sure exactly what weight they would like. Two-pieces come in a wide variety of colors and styles and can start as low $39.95 and range up into the thousands.
- Jump-break cues. These cues are three-piece cues. The butt of the cue separates into two pieces so that you can use the cue as a jump cue. Like two-piece cues, jump-break cues are typically 58" in length and vary in weights from 18 oz to 21 oz.
