Double S and Double T Take Scotch Doubles Event

Smith/Tucker Beat Emerson/Webb

Music City's Scotch Doubles event just ended earlier Saturday evening, with a surprise victory of tournament director Scott Smith (pictured to the right) and partner Toni Tucker over last year's defending team of Monica Webb and Barry Emerson. The event began yesterday with 12 teams. Smith and Tucker had a bye the first round, then went on to play Danny Harriman and Cindy Hall, winning by the score of 5-3. Double S and Double T then defeated Rafael Martinez and Christy Simpson soundly 5-2, going on to the finals.

Emerson and Webb had a bye in the first round as well, then defeated Marcus Chamat and Helena Thornfeldt 5-4. After that victory, they vanquished teammates Shawn "The Love Sponge" Putnam and Donna Favors by the score of 5-3 to make it to the finals.

The final match was an uncontested victory for Smith and Tucker (pictured to the right). They won their first three games, rarely allowing the other team to the table. Smith then made the 9 ball on the break to get on the hill, 4-0. Emerson broke the next rack, and he and Webb ran the table to get on the board. However, Tucker made two balls on her next break, and she and Smith cleared the table rapidly, winning the single-elimination event by the resounding score of 5-1.

In other news, the final four women will play Sunday afternoon. Nicole Mancini defeated Toni Varner in the one-loss side 7-2 to get into the semis, and Pamela Bell eliminated Neslie O'Hare by the score of 7-4. Mancini and Bell will meet in the one-loss side at 1 PM Sunday. Helena Thornfeldt defeated Pamela Bell 7-6 earlier this evening. Monica Webb sent Toni Varner to the one-loss side, winning 7-2. The hot seat match will take place Sunday afternoon between local player Gabe Owen and Shannon "The Cannon" Daulton. Owen defeated Putnam in the winners' bracket earlier 11-7. Daulton had his hands full with Cliff Joyner, as both contenders play all games excellently, but triumphed 11-8.

In the one-loss side, Marcus Chamat eliminated Bryce Avila 11-4 and then Scott "The Freezer" Frost 11-5. Earlier, Frost eliminated local player Scott Hafley 11-4. Jose Parica defeated Rafael Martinez 11-7 before going on to lose to Johnny Archer by the score of 11-0. Archer previously knocked Jimmy Reid out of the tournament, defeating him in a tight match that ended 11-8. Archer then went on to play a close match with Cliff Joyner, ultimately losing11-10. Shawn Putnam eliminated Marcus Chamat 11-6 in the one-loss side as well. Putnam will face off with Joyner in the one-loss side, while Daulton will go head to head with Owen. Both matches will take place at 3 PM.

Sunday's ladies' matches will begin at 1 PM.
